Genres and sub genres

A genre is what any category of forms of art or entertainment, e.g. music, are  based on some set of stylistic criteria. Genres are formed by conventions that change over time as new genres are invented and the use of old ones are discontinued. In film you can have more than one genre which is called a Sub genre e.g. Action comedy, an example of  a film which falls into that sub genre is Date Night due to the jam packed perform within the movie and the comedy comes from the playful chit chat of the characters. Often in a well known movie like Twilight its genre would be judged as romance because of the storyline man and woman falling in love. Though its also consider to have more than one genre. Fantasy is another due to the unorthodox storyline of a continuous battle between wolves and vampires. When a movie is placed in the fantasy area its often linked to the genre young adults because many movies from that genre has an  age range which is not that wide often lies between teens and infants.

Thriller is a very popular genre therefore it often offers many more movies than others. The idea is to give audience what they want and if the its noted that a genre is popular than others its likely more films coming out would be from that category. So the audience are very important to the film production. Film genres can be categorized according to the setting of the film. Nevertheless, films with the same settings can be very different, due to the use of different themes or moods so, making many thriller movies wouldn't necessarily mean all have the same storyline. Films that are difficult to categorize into a genre are often less successful as such film genres.

A film that inspires me is " Gothika" it falls into the sub genre of psychological thriller storyline is a criminal psychologist awakens to find herself a patient in the institution where she works, with no memory of the murder she's accused of committing.  A remake of the storyline would be quite difficult though I'd like to produce somethings quite similar.

The trailer shows the thriller side to the movie quite often. It changes in lighting quite alot which add tension and contributions to the films genre.                                                                                                                                                                                There are a lot of close ups allowing you to focus on them i hope to use that technique in my own work as i think its very effective

How some sides of the characters face is blocked out, it is really powerful and convincing to the audience. Id like to use this technique in my own movie opening because i believe its a good way to grab an audience giving only a little bit away but hiding everything else.
The writing on the wall is a well known style of thriller and has been repeated in many films. I find this shot exactly captivating as the writing on the wall is specifically sharp and harsh. they way the character is blurred out in the background is also a good technique as it puts audience in her perspective. These effects will be used in my screen opening.
